Extra support for single parents

An annual supplement of up to $500 for each family will be provided to low-income single parent households if, at the beginning of the month:

  • You are getting a BC Family Benefit 2024 of that month.
  • You are not someone else’s common-law partner or cohabiting spouse.
  • Your supplement will be subtracted from your total BC Family Benefit 2024 if your adjusted family net income exceeds $35,902.

Process to submit an application to receive the benefits

  • Your child is automatically registered for the B.C. family benefit if they are registered for the Canada child benefit. Nothing needs to be done.
  • You must submit an application for the Canada child benefit if your child is not currently registered.
  • To ascertain your eligibility for the B.C. family benefit, the CRA consults the data from your Canada child benefit registration.
  • If you qualify, the CRA will automatically determine how much to pay you based on data from personal tax returns that you, your spouse, and your common-law partner have submitted.
  • Once you update your information with CRA, your eligibility for the B.C. family benefit will be assessed if you relocate to British Columbia.
  • It’s important to notify the CRA as soon as you relocate out of British Columbia in order to prevent having to refund any potential benefit overpayment.
