Political influence:
Before the Assembly and Parliament elections, the BJP made a significant promise with the Subhadra scheme. This commitment contributed to the conclusion of 24 years of BJD leadership and enabled the BJP to win 20 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Women, particularly the 70 lakh members of around 6 lakh women’s self-help groups (WSHGs) under Mission Shakti, played a crucial role in the BJD’s long-term success.
Launched in 2001, Mission Shakti aimed to empower women by offering credit and market access, creating a loyal voting base for the BJD over the years. To challenge the BJD’s Mission Shakti initiative, the BJP introduced a direct money transfer scheme in its election manifesto, promising Rs 50,000 vouchers for every woman beneficiary, redeemable in two years. During the campaign, BJP workers gathered information from women in a specific format and promised quick implementation once in power, which gained significant support.
